This Cyber Patriot Award Ceremony and Reception is a Cyber Huntsville initiative to recognize 16 high performing teams and over 75 local high school and middle school students from the Tennessee Valley. This year is especially sensational as we will be honoring winning teams from all three of our local school system, Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County, as well as area private schools who participated and placed in Cyber Patriot. These teams were top performers in their tier at the state and regional levels of competition. This is also an opportunity to commend and thank the teachers, school officials, administrators, and volunteers who facilitated, coached and mentored the Cyber Patriot teams. Cybersecurity is a technical field of major importance to the Tennessee Valley companies, government agencies, and our academic institutions.
The 10th Annual National Cyber Summit was celebrated at the Von Braun Center June 5-7, 2018, with an opening reception honoring the companies whose sponsorship helped grow the event to be our largest ever. The National Cyber Summit is the preeminent event for cyber training, education and workforce development aimed at protecting our nation’s infrastructure from the ever-evolving cyber threat. This year’s summit saw growth in the participation of commercial companies as we focused on two additional tracks, Finance and Advanced Manufacturing. In addition to our partners in Academia we were honored to again have sponsorship from NSA, NIST, FBI, NASA, Department of Defense organizations and civilian departments and agencies.
Attendees represented 47 states, 625 different organizations, and 989 from out of town who stayed in our hotels, and dined in our restaurants. Many of them flew into Huntsville and rented cars.
We had 292 participate in the Job Fair for cleared and uncleared jobs.
This year we introduced the CyberReach Lounge to support diversity in the workforce. They provided networking opportunities and social events that were widely attended.

Innovate Huntsville is hosting a luncheon with guest speaker Kevin Maney, author of Play Bigger: How Pirates, Dreamers, and Innovators Create and Dominate Markets
The founders of a respected Silicon Valley advisory firm study legendary category-creating companies and reveal a groundbreaking discipline called category design.
Winning today isn’t about beating the competition at the old game. It’s about inventing a whole new game—defining a new market category, developing it, and dominating it over time. You can’t build a legendary company without building a legendary category. If you think that having the best product is all it takes to win, you’re going to lose.
In this farsighted, pioneering guide, the founders of Silicon Valley advisory firm Play Bigger rely on data analysis and interviews to understand the inner workings of “category kings”— companies such as Amazon, Salesforce, Uber, and IKEA—that give us new ways of living, thinking or doing business, often solving problems we didn’t know we had.
In Play Bigger, the authors assemble their findings to introduce the new discipline of category design. By applying category design, companies can create new demand where none existed, conditioning customers’ brains so they change their expectations and buying habits. While this discipline defines the tech industry, it applies to every kind of industry and even to personal careers.
Crossing the Chasm revolutionized how we think about new products in an existing market. The Innovator’s Dilemma taught us about disrupting an aging market. Now, Play Bigger is transforming business once again, showing us how to create the market itself.
Seating is limited and registration is available at Innovate Huntsville

Safeguarding Data in a High-Threat, High-Risk World
(You must register for this event at NAITA link below)
Program Description: In a globally-connected, information-driven economy, few things are as important as data. Lose it, lose trade secrets, compromise your customers and business partners, risk litigation and jeopardize your company’s future. If you’re in the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) industry, cyber security and cyber compliance failures compromise the warfighter, national security, and could result in hefty fines and penalties, the loss of export privileges, and even imprisonment.
This unique half-day seminar will examine the ways companies are most frequently compromised by hackers (whether financially motivated or state-sponsored), security best practices to prevent a breach, and how failures to identify, control, and track military and dual-use data in IT systems expose the A&D industry to risk of illegal exports. The seminar will discuss best practices for mitigating against cyber security threats and cyber compliance failures.
Speakers:
Rob Ringelspaugh, VP and Digital Channels Security Product Manager, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Matt Henson, CEO & Senior Advisor, TC Engine

TRAINING - Application Security: For Hackers and Developers
Software (both managed and native code) has been plagued by security errors for a long time. To combat that reality, security researchers, software quality assurance/test engineers, developers, and software managers need to acquire 6 critical skills for continuous bug hunting and repair (or exploitation): SDL, System Investigation, Static Analysis (open source and commercial), Dynamic Analysis (Burp and Fuzzers), Manual Code Auditing (source and with IDA/reversing), and PoC/Repair (ROP exploits, etc). Each of these domains is covered in detail in this mature course. As a bonus, students will leave with homework content, so they can continue pushing their abilities, well beyond the duration of the course.

Student Requirements
No hard prerequisites, but helpful to have a college Degree in a computer related disciple or equivalent work experience. Programming experience will help, but you will still get a lot out of the course even if you lack that, so no fears. All questions are good questions in VDA classes. We have a fun but instructive and intense learning experience. You won't walk away disappointed.
What Students Should Bring
Students are required to provide a laptop for the course. You need admin rights on the laptop. Your laptop should have a USB port, at least 60GB of free HD space, 6GB+ of RAM, and VMware Fusion for the Mac or workstation/player for Windows/Linux. Vmware should be installed ahead of time, or you’ll spend a bit of class time doing that.
What Students Will Be Provided With
You will be given a Windows 10 VM. Copy the VM to your disk drive and pass the portable Media to your neighbor. You will need a normal USB port (bring an adapter if you have the newer/smaller USB-C) and an OS that can read an ExFat file system thumb drive. (Most Mac and Windows have that, but with Linux, check for the driver.) You may not share course media with non-students.

Operational Technology (OT) is commonly used to control physical systems such as those found in manufacturing. It extends to cover Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and the ICS management framework, as well as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA). Operational Technology is increasingly converging with Information Technology (IT). In doing so, these converged systems are seeing a large increase in cybersecurity threats.
By merging OT with IT, the previously siloed and protected systems that industry utilizes are now open to the same kinds of security threats normally targeted at IT systems. This includes ransomware and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
To protect operational security environments there are some baseline protective measures that should be put in place. Come join Cyber Huntsville as Ben McGee with CyberProtex demonstrates the importance of securing operational technologies and demonstrates several tools and methods that are used to secure these vulnerable assets.
Attendees should bring a Windows 10 or Mac laptop to the session. Lunch will be provided to registrants.

The convergence of AI and Cyber in Quantum
with
Dr. Sergei Gleyzer
Associate Professor
Dr. Sergei Gleyzer works on new physics phenomena at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the CERN particle physics laboratory, located in Switzerland. He has been an integral part of the team that discovered the Higgs boson in 2012 and is now involved in the measurement of the properties of this new particle to pin down effects of any new physics beyond the Standard Model. Dr. Gleyzer’s research explores novel approaches to physics analysis, particle and event identification, detector reconstruction, simulation and particle physics triggering systems. Dr. Gleyzer works on the development of artificial intelligence techniques for new physics, including searches for rare decays of the Higgs boson and dark matter using the data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. In particular, his group has focused on using machine learning techniques to search for the extremely rare decays of the Higgs boson decaying into particles such as photons, electrons, and taus. In another line of research, his group is attempting to identify the nature of dark matter among the many collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In a complimentary direction aimed at understanding the nature of dark matter, Dr. Gleyzer’s group has developed a novel machine learning approach to probe dark matter with strong gravitational lensing. Dr. Gleyzer also contributes to the development of the High-Granularity Calorimeter for CMS Endcap and the High Luminosity LHC project. Dr. Gleyzer is founder of the Inter-experimental LHC Machine Learning (IML) Working group, founding convener of the CMS Experiment’s Machine Learning Forum and the Machine Learning for Science (ML4SCI) Foundation.
Other research interests include pure machine learning and computer science theory of optimization, particularly by automatic feature extraction and breaking down the learning algorithms to their most basic pieces and finding ways to optimize them.

Topic: From Intelligence to Implementation: Closing the Detection Loop with Google Threat Intelligence and MSV
In the modern SOC, the bottleneck isn't a lack of data—it’s the gap between knowing a threat exists and knowing if your specific environment can stop it. This session demonstrates a high-fidelity "Intelligence-to-Validation" workflow. We begin with Google Threat Intelligence (GTI), exploring the massive scale of Mandiant, VirusTotal, and Google’s frontline research. We will showcase how Gemini AI transforms this vast intelligence into actionable insights via natural language, allowing any analyst to perform deep malware analysis without leaving the console.
The conversation then pivots from "knowing" to "doing." Using the Vawtrak banking trojan as our case study, we will move into Mandiant Security Validation (MSV). Attendees will see a live emulation of Vawtrak’s multi-stage attack lifecycle—from initial delivery across a next-gen firewall to the resulting telemetry in Splunk. The core value of this session lies in the "Last Mile" of defense: Tuning. We will demonstrate how to use MSV’s evidence-based results to identify exactly where signatures are firing (or failing) and how to refine both firewall policies and Splunk correlation rules. This process directly attacks the #1 problem in the SOC: high false-positive rates. By the end of this presentation, attendees will understand how to leverage AI-driven intel and automated validation to move from noisy, generic alerts to a hardened, verified security posture.
Karlo Arozqueta is a 26-year veteran of the information security field who has done every job from running ethernet cable to running the Computer Incident Response team for 7 years in a 24x7 Security Operations center for a DHS Agency. In addition to being a security practitioner, he is an accomplished public speaker, having spoken at hacker and security conferences both large and small all over the US. He is currently a Senior Solutions Architect over the Federal market at Google Public Sector (formerly Mandiant) where he has spent the last ~8 years evangelizing the many benefits of the Mandiant/Google Security portfolio.
